Decay / Cavities / Caries
ARE YOU PASSING CAVITIES TO YOUR BABY?
Your loved ones?
Cavities are not something that you have. It is something you get from other people! Streptococcus Mutans is the predominant bacteria that causes cavities. If your parents or siblings had cavities chances are you got them from sharing utensils and foods such as lolly-pops. For those teenagers out there…you can get cavities from kissing!
Simple sugars in food are these bacteria’s primary energy source. Thus eating sugary foods contributes to formation of plaque as quickly as 20 minutes after eating . If not removed by proper flossing and brushing the decay process begins. As the acids in the plaque begin to weaken and dissolve the enamel, holes in the teeth are created and pesky S. Mutans. As they start eating away at the tooth structure Cavities or Caries is formed.
Cavities are usually painless until they grow bigger and closer to the nerve or the center of the tooth. Untreated decay and toxins secreted by bacteria, destroy enamel and the internal structure of the tooth, resulting in root canals and eventual loss of the teeth.
How bad is Streptococcus Mutans? It is one of the bacteria that causes flesh eating disease. Need I say more?
